Kotej
Política de privacidad
Última actualización: 25 de octubre de 2026 · Read this in English

Last updated: 25 October 2026 · Leer en español
The macOS app collects no data. It does not collect, store or transmit information about you or about how you use it.
The web version counts visits and which features are used, anonymously, with analytics I host myself and with Microsoft Clarity, without cookies and without anything that identifies you.
The files you compare never leave your machine. All comparison happens on your own computer.
What data is collected
In the macOS app, none. Kotej has no accounts, asks for no sign-up, uses no analytics or telemetry, shows no advertising and bundles no third-party SDKs of any kind.
On the web version (kotej.app) I use Umami, open-source analytics running on my own server, to learn how many people use it and which features help them. It records:
- Page views, with the approximate country, browser, operating system, language, screen size and the site you came from.
- Anonymous usage events: whether you compare folders, files or archives; how many files, in ranges (1, 2-10, 11-100…); the comparison mode; whether the result is equal or different; the log format recognised; the diff layout; the options you change; and whether you export or compare pasted text.
It never records file or folder names, paths or contents: what you compare never leaves your browser. It sets no cookies, does not store your IP address, does not follow you across sites and honours your browser's Do Not Track setting. The data stays on my server, is not shared with anyone and is not used for advertising. A content blocker may stop the analytics without breaking the site.
I also use Microsoft Clarity to see, in aggregate, where people click and where they get stuck: heatmaps and recordings of how the interface is used. It is set up without cookies and with the whole comparison area masked, so recordings show no file names, paths or contents, nor anything you type into a text field. Microsoft processes that data under its privacy statement.
What happens to the files you compare
They are read and compared on your machine, and they stay there. Specifically, in the macOS app:
- The app runs inside the macOS sandbox and requests no network entitlement. It technically cannot send your files anywhere.
- It only reaches what you choose: what you open from the dialog, drop on the window, or hand to it from the Finder menu.
- To restore your open tabs when you reopen the app, macOS stores a security-scoped bookmark inside the app's private container. That is a permission to access a file, not a copy of it, and it never leaves your machine.
- When comparing a ZIP, JAR or EAR, the entries that need reading are extracted into a temporary folder inside the app's private container, and then discarded.
- Preferences (comparison mode, filters, tolerances) are stored on your machine only.
In the web version, files are read through browser APIs and compared in the page itself. There is nowhere they get uploaded to: the only thing the server receives is what you write in the feedback form.
When you choose to share something
The app can export a report of a comparison ("Copy for an AI chat", "Save as Markdown/JSON…"). That report is generated on your machine and stays wherever you put it: the clipboard, or the file you pick. Kotej does not send it anywhere. If you then paste it into a third-party service, what happens to that content is governed by that service's privacy policy.
On the web, the "Send feedback" form sends what you write, its type (bug, feature or change), your email if you give one and, if you leave the box ticked, the Kotej version, browser, system and language. It never attaches your files. It reaches me, in my own tools, and is only used to answer you and improve Kotej.
Third parties
The Umami analytics run on my own server and nobody else sees them. On the web, Microsoft Clarity receives the usage data described above, without cookies and without the content of what you compare. In the macOS app, the only third-party relationship is the purchase: if you buy the app on the Mac App Store, Apple processes the payment and gives me aggregated, anonymous sales and download statistics. They contain nothing that identifies you and are covered by Apple's privacy policy.
Children
Kotej is a developer tool with no sensitive content and is not directed at children. Since it collects no personal data, it collects none from children either.
Your rights
The GDPR gives you the right to access, correct or delete your personal data. With Kotej there is nothing to exercise: the web data is anonymous and cannot tell who you are, so I hold no data of yours to hand over or erase. Uninstalling the app removes anything it had stored on your machine.
Changes to this policy
If a future version of Kotej ever collected any data, this page would be updated before that version shipped, with the revision date at the top.
